Coastal Discovery at Rocktail Beach Camp

Savor the natural beauty of South Africa’s eastern coastline, including a UNESCO-protected area, at a family-friendly lodge.

About Your Trip

Every day is a seaside adventure on this action-packed DreamTrip to Maputaland. Your lodge offers a variety of interesting activities for you and your family to enjoy. Visit the country’s largest fresh water lake, Lake Sibaya, and spot wildlife like hippos and birds. Swim or snorkel at Lala Nek and look for marine life amongst the reefs. Take advantage of the lodge’s coastal location to learn about the beach and forest from guided nature walks. Venture into the bush on nature drives, watch sea turtles bury their eggs deep within the sand, or scuba dive at one of the world’s top dive destinations close to your dwelling.

What we love:
• Kid-specific activities at your lodge include guided nature walks, sandboarding, snorkeling, arts and crafts, baking and more.
• Lake Sibaya is part of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site due to its rich biodiversity, unique ecosystems and natural beauty.
• Neighboring Maputaland Marine Reserve, a popular diving site, is designated as a protected area, regulating human activity to ensure conservation of its ecosystem.

We base children’s pricing on their age at the time of travel. Their reservation has to be booked and paid for in order for you to check them in.

Please remember to book a reservation for everyone you’re bringing along on your DreamTrip before you travel. Otherwise, they’ll be charged the hotel’s prevailing rate, not the trip price.

Children age 16 and under must share the chalet with adults. Children over 17 are regarded as adults.

Choice of Activities at Rocktail Beach Camp:
• As some activities may be affected by the tides, scheduling arrangements are best made on-site with camp staff and the In-destination Support team member at the time of the member’s visit.
• Children under the age of 10 may not participate in scuba diving.

Turtle Drive:
• During the summer season (October to March), guests can take the opportunity of a lifetime to witness loggerhead and leatherback turtles coming ashore to dig a nest and lay eggs. It is also a moving experience to watching the hatchling turtles make their way to the ocean.
• This activity is at an additional cost.

Access to Rocktail Beach Camp:
• The Manzengwenya access gate into the reserve is open between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. You will not be able to gain access to the reserve outside of these hours.
• Park entrance fee of 20 rand per person per entry, and 15 rand per vehicle per entry to be paid in cash (rates subject to change).

• Firearms must be declared at the gate.
• If you are arriving with your own 4x4 vehicle and intend to stay for a number of nights at Rocktail Beach Camp, you are requested to bring additional fuel for excursions in your vehicle. The camp cannot supply you with fuel and the nearest fuel station is approximately 120 kilometres from the camp at Mkuze, Pongola or Jozini. (Please note that larger towns may accept petrol cards; in other areas they only accept cash.)
• Please remember to drive to Rocktail Beach Camp on the tar road via Hluhluwe and Mbazwane.
• Should you be driving, we strongly advise you take certain precautions due to the remoteness of the area. From experience, we have found cellular/mobile phones to be invaluable whenever there has been a problem (once away from the main roads, generally only Vodacom users will have reception).
• You should also have at least one sound, spare tire and the equipment necessary to change a flat tire. Hired cars in particular should be checked on pick-up to ensure they have all the necessary items.
